*The separation of Morocco and Western Sahara is controversial. After the colonial period and the withdrawal of Spain in 1975, Western Sahara was almost completely annexed by Morocco. However, about 1/5 of the population, the Saharawis (Frente Polisario), are still fighting for an independent state. The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (DARS) is only recognised by 50 countries and Western Sahara is almost entirely under Moroccan control. The UN has proposed a referendum as a solution, but no agreement has yet been reached.
